I think you were probably here for Trinity, in which case there were 3 expansions you missed. All the expansions did a variety of things not listed here, but I'll list the major additions
Empyrean age was all about Faction Warfare. Basically, systems in between Caldari/Gallente and Minmatar/Amarr space can be captured. With .5 faction standing, or a corp with .5 faction standing, you can join a militia and capture territory. It's basically just easy-access PVP. There's no real rewards, really, for FW as of yet...it exists to give new players and non-PVP players quick ,easy access to PVP so they can get accustomed to it.
Quantum Rise did a variety of things...it added the Orca, a command ship for miners with a decent-sized ship maintenance bay that can travel around hisec. They deployed a bunch of new stuff to cut lag...QR kicked lag in the face, hard. Even Jita is actually quite tolerable with 1000+ people. It rebalanced t2 transport ships..blockade runners get the ability to fit a covops cloak, and DSTs now get the +2 warp strength. Bombs were made cheaper. You can now shift+drag weapons on to each other to group them so F1-f8 becomes f1. Certificates were added. Basically, they're a replacement for "what skills do I need to fly X?". Certs are basically just lists of skills you need to do X competently.
Also, QR added the nanonerfÖ. Ships now can't go WTFOMGREEDICULOUS speeds, and the warp scrambler (the short ranged one, NOT the warp disruptor) shut off microwarpdrives. Stasis webifiers, however, were nerfed (t2 only slows down target by 60% from 90%), and missiles were tweaked to fit into this. The MWD is now the "control range/tackle" mod, and the afterburner is now the speedtank mod.
The latest one, Apocrypha, gave lots of performance boosts. Wormhole space was added...basically, 2500 new systems with delayed mode local. No stargates, no stations, and wormholes are temporary and can collapse on you. Land of roaming gangs. W-space has materials to make the new tech 3 cruisers...which are basically modular cruisers. A t3 cruiser has individual subsystems that can be swapped out to give ridiculous flexibility. However, you lose one level of a rank 1 skill related to the t3 ship if it pops with you in it (Although you can, of course, eject)
new players now start with only 50K skillpoints (down from 800K), but learn at double the rate up to 1.6m SP. The tutorial was revamped, as well.
